A Sentimental Post

When I tell people I'm a social worker, the conversation inevitably turns to the difficult situations social workers see on a daily basis. Many people tell me they think it would be a very difficult job. In some ways they are right--I am face to face with difficult situations constantly. Some situations are very hard to see and work with. But I have to tell you, not only do I see the hard side of life--I also see the amazing side too.

I am always in awe of how giving people can be. When I was in St. Louis, it was amazing the amount of school supplies, Christmas gifts, food, etc. that was donated by people in the community to children in foster care.

Last week I sent out a request through a regular newspaper article in Spokane called, "Somebody Needs You." I requested some dishes, pots and pans, and silverware for a client who was homeless and just moved into her own apartment last Friday. My phone was ringing off the hook with people willing to give. I just went and picked up a load of brand new kitchen items and delivered them to my client. She was so greatful--she has practically nothing and there was no way she could have gotten everything she needs on her own.

I've donated to various causes throughout my life and sometimes I wonder what happened to the things I donated. Let me tell you as someone who is often the donation deliverer--what you contribute really makes a difference and helps people feel loved. AfterI dropped off the donations today, I was just overwhelmed with our capacity to good--it makes me want to be a better and more giving person. So please, never get too down on mankind--there are still plenty of amazing people all around us.
